How To Pack Light

Tips / Travel

We all know checking a bag can be risky and carting several bags all over the world on vacation can be a hassle. When packing for a two-week vacation, most people can remove half of their luggage and still be in great shape.

First and foremost, travelers should consider where they are going, what the climate will be and what they intend on doing while there. If there is no cause for evening wear or heavy clothing, vacationers can get away with four complete outfits and change them up everyday for two weeks. Each piece should be basic and go together for easy interchanging. Also items with the tags still on them often never get worn, so skip them and pack old faithfuls and buy new while on vacation.

It is also important to remember that almost anywhere in the world hotels have laundry services, towns have Laundromats and off-the-beaten path localeshave lakes and rivers in case of clothing emergencies. With that in mind, along with possibly four or five complete outfits, packers should bring laundry soap. Each to-go pack is affordable, compact, effective and can be used in any nearby sink.

Rolling is key. Shoving and folding seems reasonable at the time, but as long as the clothing is relatively wrinkle resistant, it can be rolled tight.

Consider the flight outfit as a free pass. This ensemble should be the bulkier items that would otherwise take up too much space in the carry-on, or just a layering of lighter pieces. For those planning to work out while on vacation, wear sneakers on the plane and pack one pair of everyday shoes if necessary.
