Taking a scenic drive to the beach or a weekend outing with friends can take a turn for the worse when temperatures climb. Remember heat is part of summer and plan accordingly — don’t let it ruin your road trip.
Plan your route well. If you can avoid driving on long stretches of highway during the heat of the day or passing through areas experiencing heat waves, do so. These slight modifications may add more time to your trip but will make the experience more enjoyable.
Stay hydrated. While hydration is usually associated with sports or outdoor activities, staying hydrated in the car is just as important. A cold drink will go a long way to cool your nerves and maintain body temperature. Popsicles and fresh fruits make excellent supplements to drinking water.
Don’t forget the sunscreen. Although many cars have tinted windows, driver’s tan (on the forearms and hands) can happen. Avoid this unsightly tan line by wearing sunscreen and encouraging passengers to do the same.
Take breaks. Rest stops are there for a reason — they are essential for your sanity as well as the health of your engine. If the engine is close to overheating and you cannot stop take some pressure off the motor by turning on the heat and opening the windows.
Road trips provide excellent bonding and sightseeing experiences. Following these tips will make sure your next trip is a breeze!
