With endless educational opportunities and destinations around the world, selecting a study abroad program may appear overwhelming. The long list of tasks needed before heading overseas can make for a difficult decision. Follow our tips on how to select the right study abroad program for you.
Talk to your support system. First and foremost, consult with your guardians, as more than likely they will be funding your trip. Weigh the pros and cons; perhaps they feel it is best to study junior year rather than sophomore year. Once you gather your information, present it to them, asking for their opinions and input.
Decide if study abroad is for you. If you don’t enjoy traveling to unfamiliar places away from family and friends or exploring new cultures, then you may need to reconsider. Perhaps you can look for a service trip inside your country, not too far from home.
Decide when and where to study. With many countries and cities, choosing the location is the most difficult. Ask yourself if you prefer a big city or small town? Do you enjoy nightlife and adventure, or being able to focus on your studies? Are you comfortable learning a different language? What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Define your goals and constraints in order to find a program that meets your academic, financial and personal needs.
Find study abroad programs. Find a program; from summer trips to semester-long and full academic year programs, there are several to choose from. Talk with the study abroad office at your school and see what they recommend. Research is key. Read reviews from other study abroad students who write about the pros and cons of their experience in certain programs. Maybe you prefer a program with an on-site director, or one where other services are included.
Put the plan into action. Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, start applying. Make sure to maintain good grades, as certain universities abroad require a specific GPA. Most importantly, remember to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Known as Florida’s Forgotten Coast, this stretch of the Florida Panhandle is often overlooked for more well-known destinations in the state, such as Panama City Beach, Miami and Tampa.
