How to Stay Healthy on a Plane

Tips / Travel

When you cram large groups of people together in a small space at 35,000 feet in the air with a noticeably low amount of humidity, the result is a veritable playground for bacteria. Arm yourself on your next flight by preparing ahead of time to fight off viruses and even the common cold.

Hydrate

Low humidity and high elevation when flying in an airplane are two of the main reasons our immune systems are defenseless as the normal mucosa that block bacteria tend to dry out. Purchase a large bottle of water before you board the flight (after you pass through security, of course) and skip the overpriced alcoholic drink that you normally sip to calm your flying fears.

Keep clean

Stow a TSA-friendly-sized bottle of hand sanitizer in your carry-on luggage. If you need to use the bathroom on the plane, wash your hands and then use the paper towel to open the door.

Take your vitamins

Have an extra glass of orange juice before your flight or sip on some water mixed with Emergen-C Vitamin C powder. Every little bit of immune system protection helps when you’re in such close quarters with strangers.
