Tips / Travel

Our pets are important to us, and leaving them behind when we travel is not an easy thing to do. Traveling with them, though, can be stressful. Here are a few tips to make traveling with your pet a little easier, safer and less stressful for you and your pet.

On the Road

Pets, including dogs, cats and other animals, should not be allowed to roam freely in a moving vehicle, just as children are not allowed to do so. Pets should be placed in a carrier, which is then secured with a seatbelt to ensure he or she does not get tossed around in an accident. There are also pet-friendly harnesses available for extra security.

In the Air

If you’re traveling by air, consider a pet-friendly airline, like United Airlines or Southwest Airlines. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, each airline is able to decide its own policies and procedures and some do not allow pets in the cabin. Call the airline ahead of time to learn the policies and determine the safest ways to travel with your pet. Avoid placing your pet underneath the plane and instead find out if they can be in the cabin with you.

Avoid Anxiety

If you know your pet experiences anxiety while traveling, consult your vet about options to decrease that anxiety. Several safe medications are available as well as special jackets known to calm pets. Always bring your pet’s regular food to avoid upset stomachs.

Protecting Your Pet’s Health

Before traveling, make sure your pet is up to date on all regular vaccinations one to two months before leaving, so they have time to adjust to the medicine before traveling. Make sure to have your vet’s number on hand should there be a health emergency.
