Is First Class Worth It? Why These Coveted Seats Are So Expensive

One of the most dreadful parts of boarding a plane is passing the spacious, comfortable, fully equipped first-class seats that some economy passengers can only dream of sitting in one day. But what makes these desirable seats so expensive, and is the extra cost really worth it?

First-class amenities evolved from just a bit of extra legroom to multicourse menus conceptualized by Michelin-starred chefs. Passengers can drift off into a peaceful sleep in lie-flat beds with top-of-the-line bedding, eye masks and sometimes even pajamas.

Privacy is also a worthy perk to flying first class. Some seats have doors that separate passengers from the aisle or from other passengers, ensuring complete privacy from snoring neighbors and armrest wars. These additions clearly take up a lot of space in the plane, one reason for the tickets’ exorbitant prices.

First-class tickets typically also come with first-class lounge access both before and after the flight. The ability to shower, decompress and enjoy high-quality food is arguably worth the extra 70 percent added to some first-class ticket costs.

Airlines know travelers for whom money is not a concern will keep paying for these extra services, so bringing down the prices does not seem likely in the near future. But brushing up on points, miles and how to use them most effectively can make your dream of first class a strategic reality.
