Contemporary art is a divisive subject for many, but I’ve often found it can be intriguing to see what others can create. The Jepson Center for the Arts in Savannah, Ga., is a prime example of how even modern artists can still tell a unique story in unconventional ways.
With more than 7,500 feet of gallery space, the Jepson Center has plenty of room for exhibits but seems averse to using it, to both the center and the guests’ detriment in my opinion. What they do have inside is pretty creative, though I was told the exhibits rotate regularly so I can’t attest to what you might find. They do contain at least one exhibit that remains year-round that holds work from renowned contemporary artists including Jeff Koons, Frank Stella and Richard Avedon. It’s also where you’ll find the iconic Bird Girl statue featured on the front of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
The center also includes a children’s room supposedly around 3,500 square feet, but it seemed much smaller in person. Still, I can imagine kids would have a great time exploring in there. They also host a couple of different tours, one that explores the current exhibitions and another that clues you into the architecture of the building itself.
Browsing through the museum was a great way to kill roughly an hour of time during my trip to Savannah and I’d recommend it to anyone interested in seeing excellent examples of modern art.
