How to Keep the “Low Cost” in Low-Cost Flights

Tips / Budget

European airlines are forging the path to the world’s most affordable flights. The catch to these low fares is to deprive passengers of the standard amenities we have become accustomed to, like free checked bags, online check-in and in-flight food and beverages. Nabbing cheap airfare in Europe is no problem, but here’s how to avoid add-on charges and keep the price as low as the day you booked.

Get to know the airline. When booking a flight on Ryanair, Norwegian Air and the like, spend a few extra minutes scouring the airline’s website to learn exactly what is included in your ticket purchase, as well as the estimated fees for extra services, should you choose to add on later.

Pack snacks. To avoid having to pay astronomical prices for an in-flight baguette sandwich and a bottle of water, or even the high prices for airport food, consider prepping your own food at home, keeping the liquid restrictions in mind, of course.

Carry on. It’s no secret carrying luggage onto the plane will prevent you from having to pay checked-bag fees, but some airlines, like Hungary’s Wizz Air, don’t have overhead bins on some of aircraft, thus limiting you to one personal item and requiring you to check your intended carry-on. Before you start packing, make sure you’re clear about what is allowed on board and potential pop-up costs.
