Tips / Travel

Flying in the United States is expensive nowadays. Although the domestic flights look cheap, they tack on lots of extra costs and by the time you get to the final page to confirm your ticket, you need to take out a small loan to afford it. With Amtrak, however, you can use these tips to get to your destination and save a few dollars on the way.

A good place to start is to book early. It’s not always possible to know when you’re going to travel, but if you can, book at least two weeks in advance. You can save 25 percent or more on your ticket this way. If you can’t book in advance, make sure, whatever you do, you don’t buy your tickets at the station. Buy them online or over the phone. If you get the Amtrak app, you can keep ahead of the game and find the best prices. Or, on their website, check out the Hot Deals and the Weekly Specials, to find some great deals.

Depending on the state you’re in and where you’re traveling, deals will vary. Some states have more discounts than others, so if you’re on a long trip across the country, keep checking online for cheap tickets.

Go with your family and your kids can travel for half-price. This great offer means your family can receive this discount on the lowest available adult train fare on the majority of Amtrak trains. Plus, if you follow Amtrak on Facebook and Twitter, then you can keep up to date on important travel updates, fantastic discounts and some fun contests with free tickets as prizes.

Although your first thought when you decide to travel might be to go by plane, check if your journey by rail is cheaper. It will take longer, but you’ll be treated to some beautiful panoramic views and a truly American experience.
