Each year, the otherwise unassuming French town of Le Mans plays host to one of the most iconic events on the motor racing calendar.

For many years, the greatest drivers in the world have taken part in the 24-hour race as a test of endurance and speed. It might sound downright irresponsible to make one person drive a high-powered sports car for a whole day straight, but luckily each car is driven by a team of two.

They race around the famous circuit at speeds of more than 200 mph, driving some of the most technologically advanced cars around. In recent years, Audi has been testing its hybrid technology at the track with great results. Also in recent years, the race has been a shootout between Audi and Porsche, but other famous brands such as Toyota are also involved.

You can get to Le Mans in less than two hours from Paris on the fast train known as the TGV. Tickets to the race itself cost €78 from the official website.

After the racing is over, stick around in Le Mans to see some of the typical French architecture and sample some of the local wine. For a weekend, the town comes alive and there are plenty of events associated with the race for you to take part in.

Book accommodation early to make sure you have somewhere to stay on the busiest weekend of the year in Le Mans.
