Trends / History

Guatemala has a large indigenous population that makes up 40 percent of the total population of 16 million. They maintain a strong grasp of their heritage, with a strong cultural tradition. One way they express their culture is through textiles, with many people still using traditional forms of dress.

In some places, artisans give weaving workshops to make sure visitors can learn about their traditions. One of the best places to do so is San Juan la Laguna, a small village nestled on the shore of Lake Atitlan.

There are many different Mayan communities living around the lake, but the female weavers of San Juan are the most receptive to visitors. A cooperative named the Lema Association gives workshops showing how to use a back-strap loom, and visitors can try it out for themselves.

Other women will educate you on how the textiles are tinted using natural dyes from local plants. The products are 100 percent natural and environmentally friendly.

It’s an incredibly long and complicated process, and learning about it will make you respect the work of the women even more than before. Make sure to take home some souvenirs for yourself and your family.

Whether you take home a bag, a jacket or a piece of fabric, you’ll have wonderful memories of your time in San Juan.
