While Cape Town might hold the title of South Africa’s most gay friendly city, Johannesburg is certainly no slouch when it comes to providing a fun, welcoming atmosphere for the LGBT community.
Jo’burg plays host to the annual Out in Africa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival every March and has held a pride parade every year since 1990.
For lovers of nightlife, the city offers multiple options, with favorites being Beefcakes and Babylon Club. For dining out, there’s the quirky Mamma’s Shebeen and Moyo.
While it’s difficult to pinpoint a particular gay area in Johannesburg like there is in Cape Town, the LGBT community is usually found all over here. Visitors shouldn’t be afraid to walk around town arm-in-arm.
If you’re looking for a place to stay, Voelkkop Guest Farm is beloved by gay men who enjoy spending time in the buff. Otherwise, there are other great options like the Saxon Boutique Hotel or Graton Guest House that are very inclusive.
Jo’burg has always had a reputation for being a great destination for LGBT travelers and it’s also a fairly popular honeymoon spot, so feel free to book a trip there today and get ready for quite the adventure.
