Trends / LGBTQIA+

Namibia, like many African countries, has a problematic history when it comes to LGBTQ rights. Homosexuality is still illegal in the country, though efforts have been made to curb discrimination in the workplace and in living arrangements. Like most places, you’ll find a more welcoming environment in the country when surrounded by a younger crowd.

Windhoek is Namibia’s largest city and thus has the most vibrant culture. Here you’ll find a variety of nightlife options, including Andy’s Bar and Joe’s Beerhouse, neither of which cater to a specifically LGBTQ clientele but are still safe places to enjoy an evening. Jojo’s Music and Arts Café and Skybar are also fantastic places to grab a bite to eat in the evening.

Namibia’s diverse wildlife is the real draw and you’ll want to spend a lot of time discovering the outdoors. The Namib Desert is a hotbed of fantastic flora and fauna, with elephants and large cat safaris, while the seaside town of Swakopmund is a great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful beaches.

Namibia might not provide a wealth of LGBTQ-oriented activities, but you shouldn’t feel unwelcome in most of the larger cities. Windhoek even held its first Pride parade in 2017, a sign the country is willing to move forward. However, public displays of affection should probably be avoided outside the cities at this time.

No, it’s not Monterey Bay. We’re talking Morro Bay, California, located about a 2.5-hour drive to the south, about halfway between San Jose and Los Angeles. A quieter destination, Morro Bay offers plenty for the outdoor adventurer to enjoy.
