Trends / LGBTQIA+

San Miguel de Allende, located in the mountainous high desert of central Mexico, is a charming city brimming with stylish boutiques, art galleries, fine dining and a vibrant nightlife. The Spanish Colonial culture has given the town a reputation for artistic appeal and an inclusive atmosphere, making it the perfect destination for LGBTQ travelers.

The hill town has always largely attracted a 35-plus crowd, but lately has been gaining traction among millennials with a growing nightlife scene and budget-friendly accommodations and events.

Just a block away from the city’s El Jardin central plaza lies Mama Mia, a popular option for locals and tourists that features live music, dancing and excellent drinks. It caters to a mixed crowd of straight and gay clientele and is considered a must for any traveler. Nearby Mint is also a good option for tourists who enjoy a night of dancing or those who want to relax in the lounge.

When it comes to dining, Petit Four, adjacent to Mint, is a gay-owned bakery and coffeehouse that serves up wonderful treats and even offers cooking lessons. The Luna Rooftop Tapas Bar offers delicious tapas and great views of the city, with an overlook that gives a perfect line of sight to the Parroquia Church.

If you’re a fan of offbeat attractions you’ll definitely want to check out the Chapel of Jimmy Ray. This quirky little gallery showcases the work of artist Anado McLauchlin and contains some fantastically colorful, if not sort of strange, works of art. Be sure to fit it in between stops at the Galleria Atotonilco and the Canada de la Virgen.

San Miguel de Allende doesn’t contain many exclusively LGBTQ venues, if any at all, but everywhere you go in town you’ll find a welcoming crowd that celebrates diversity in all its forms.
