Trends / LGBTQIA+

Vienna, Austria, is widely known for its eclectic music and culture, so it’s no surprise the city has become a popular destination for LGBTQ travelers. While there is no singular predominately gay neighborhood in the city, Vienna managed to cultivate such an open and diverse gay and lesbian scene, it doesn’t need one.

The Volks Opera and State Opera houses are world-renowned and play an integral role in the burgeoning LGBTQ culture of the capital. The Museums Quartier also amplifies the cultural appeal to new heights. The KunstHaus Wien showcases numerous gay-themed exhibits and events throughout the year.

Nightlife in Vienna has much to offer, with members of the community flocking to popular bars like Felixx and Café Savoy. The Village Bar is also a great place to start the evening with a few drinks in a sociable, relaxed atmosphere.

As for food, the Naschmarkt, an open-air food market, is a must-see spot to try the different flavors available in the city. Here you’ll find Café Willendorf, a local hot spot of delicious eats, situated near the Gay and Lesbian Community Center.

Summer is when the diversity of Vienna comes alive with the renowned Wien ist Andersrum (Vienna is Queer) cultural festival in June and the Rainbow Parade following in July. When December rolls around, the city hosts Loveball to help the LGBTQ community ring in the New Year.

Vienna certainly earned its reputation as a welcoming and vibrant city for LGBTQ travelers and should have a spot on every explorer’s bucket list.
