The Maker Faire in Vienna is an unusual event. If you enjoy HGTV, you might find something like the Maker Faire a dream come true. It first began in 2006 and is an international event. The original Maker Faire took place in San Matteo, Calif., and was organized by the creators of Make magazine. This publication is a tribute to all things DIY and the faire follows suit. The original faire in California had 900 makers and more than 130,000 visitors. The first time it took place in Vienna was in 2016 — a smaller crowd for sure with 240 makers, but what it lacked in numbers, it made up for in enthusiasm.
Makers create projects in a number of categories like Art & Design, 3D printing and scanning, food, sound and even bio-hacking. Similar to the magazine, the ethos of the faire is to inspire attendees to understand new technologies and put them into action, while also freely experimenting with new ideas. The faire allows people to learn new skills or continue to hone ones they have been developing, like HAM Radio Projects.
The great thing about Maker Faire is they happen almost every weekend somewhere in the world. You can spend a day with kindred spirits who are ready to make and create. Even though Vienna’s Faire is over, there are many coming up in 2018. Check the website for a Maker Faire near you.
