You went to college, graduated, landed a full-time job and received your first pay check … so now what?

One of the most common reasons millennials are unsure how to properly handle their finances is due to the lack of information and time spent on the subject while in school. If you don’t want your 20s to be a time when you drown in debt, you need to be proactive and learn how to take control of your finances.

Life can be expensive so it is important to become financially literate. Follow our tips on mastering your personal finances.
Create a basic budget. This doesn’t mean your money has to be tracked down to every last penny, but save all of your receipts. Find out where you’re spending your money. You may realize you need to cut back in a few areas. Start getting an idea of how much you will be spending monthly in rent, utilities, food, a gym membership, Netflix, shopping and going out. It is important to be aware of how much you are spending so you don’t spend more than you make.

Set financial goals for yourself. Where do you see yourself in a few years — paying off student loans, having a wedding, starting a family? List out your goals, begin to prioritize and quantify them. Understand you need to put away some money in each paycheck to attain these goals down the road.

Pay yourself in more ways than one. Give yourself an allowance and set it aside for a reward. Don’t forget to take as little as $5 out of your paycheck each time to put into an emergency savings fund in case the unexpected happens.

Don’t forget about retirement. Start contributing to your 401(k) now. It’s never too early.
