Base layers — they help keep your core warm, provide next-to-skin comfort and offer protection from the elements. So why not have a base layer for your camera?

The ingenious product from gear company Matador consists of a cozy, down jacket-like pocket for your SLR camera. The puffy shell protects your camera from damage as you travel or hike, and though it’s not going to completely protect it if you drop it off a cliff, it’s a useful product for normal activity — and it will save you from having to tote a larger, less protective camera case.

The base layer is intended for use as you wear the camera around your neck using the camera’s own strap. As you bend down and move about your day, the camera is protected from bashing against rocks and other hard surfaces. And you’ll have quick, easy access to your camera for shooting.

The base layer also comes with an attached rain fly that nests inside a pocket at the bottom of the base layer. The fly can easily be unpacked, slipped over the base layer and folded into the base layer’s clip closure for protection from rain. The product can be washed and tumble dried on low — another useful aspect of this fantastic product.
