Christmas in Mexico is a sight to behold, with a number of traditions that mark out the celebrations from those in other countries.
While there may be Nativity scenes constructed in other Christian nations around the world, in Mexico they are a huge deal. Known as nacimientos, these lavish nativity scenes are often found in public spaces as well as front gardens of houses.
Nacimientos are usually set up Dec. 16, which marks the beginning of Christmas season. In Mexico, celebrations aren’t limited to Dec. 25, but take place from Dec. 16 onward. On this date processions known as posadas take place throughout the streets, with groups of people coming together to walk through town before heading to a particular house for a party.
While these Christian traditions are observed in most places throughout the country, some areas have their own specific ways of celebrating Christmas. In Tarimbaro, Michoacan, locals get together to dance through the streets and celebrate the diverse ethnic makeup of the population.
Down in Oaxaca, the most distinctive night of celebrations takes place on Dec. 23. The “Night of the Radishes” shows off Christmas figures made from radishes and other plants, and has its roots in the mixture of local and colonial Spanish traditions.
If you find yourself in Mexico for Christmas, you are sure to enjoy the processions and nativity scenes. However if you want to see something truly local, head to Michoacan or Oaxaca.
