Movie Tourism in New Zealand

For all the times you watch a movie and wonder, “Where was this filmed?,” that, right there, is some of the best tourism advertising money can buy. Some of the most memorable filming locations begin as unfamiliar or less-visited areas, but later see a tourism boom post film production. One of the most famous examples of cinematic travel is The Lord of the Rings trilogy — filmed entirely in New Zealand.

Since the first The Lord of the Rings released in 2001, New Zealand has seen an incredible boost in tourism. New Zealand’s majestic and seemingly otherworldly landscape has since attracted many films, setting the scene for blockbusters such as Avatar, King Kong, the Hobbit Trilogy, The Last Samurai and Chronicles of Narnia — just to name a few big hitters.
