The Mummy Museum, Guanajuato

The mountain town of Guanajuato is a wonderfully pretty place to spend a few days, and it’s also home to a strange museum.

Criticized by some for its graphic displays, the Mummy Museum nonetheless fascinates many other visitors. The mummified remains from the city cemetery are put on show for visitors following a mandatory five-year decomposition period and if family members can no longer pay the fees for a burial plot.

The museum brings together mummies of all different ages, including the smallest mummy in the world. This mummified baby was buried along with its mother, before both were dug up and put in the museum.

There are several other babies on display, and it’s these small mummies that seem to cause the most discomfort. It’s strange to look at dead bodies of any age, but the thought of a life cut short at such a young age is troubling for many visitors.

The whole museum takes around an hour to visit, and it costs $4 to get in. It’s a great place to visit, although sensitive souls should be aware some people find it a bit upsetting. It might be a good idea to leave small children at home for this one.
