Tips / Other

Whether seasonally or year-round, farmers markets are a great attraction for experiencing a destination. Plan a trip to the market in your hometown or during your travels. Follow our tips for making the most of your trip to the farmers market.

  • Bring cash. Many vendors are cash only, so make sure you come prepared. If you plan on purchasing items like meat or fish, bring enough money to cover everything.
  • Go early. The best produce is available right when the market opens. If you want the best selection, arrive early.
  • Do a loop. While it might be tempting to buy everything you want from the first vendor you see, it’s best to stroll the entire market to compare prices and see what’s available.
  • Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask the sellers about their products. Most vendors love to talk about their products and offer tips on the best way to preserve produce or prepare ingredients.
  • Bring your own bag. If you intend to make multiple purchases at different stalls, getting a plastic bag from each vendor can be clumsy. Take a reusable bag instead.
  • Look beyond produce. Don’t limit your purchases to fruits and vegetables. Explore other stands with baked goods, cheese, ready-made foods and flowers. You might find unique items you would otherwise overlook.
  • Purchase delicate items last. Save the fragile items for the end of your shopping trip. Anything that will bruise easily, crack or wilt should be placed at the top of your shopping bag.
