Matariki (the Pleiades) signals Māori New Year, which twinkles in the winter sky just before dawn. On this day, communities come together to celebrate and reflect on a time of joy and peace.
Guests of this unique journey can expect a sunset and stargazing experience at Fyffe House with expert guidance from Dark Sky Trust; a snack platter and entrée onboard and full winter roast dinner on return; telescopes and Bluetooth-viewing access; cozy fire pits and hot drinks like tea, coffee and hot chocolate under the night sky; and more. Before departing, passengers can explore Fyffe House’s store, featuring local crafts and Matariki-themed products.

Fyffe House is the oldest surviving building in Kaikōura and an important historical site. Built in 1844, the house was original a whaling station, and even sits on foundations made from whale vertebrae, highlighting the region’s whaling past. Today, the house is a museum.
Tickets are $449 per person. The trip leaves from Ōtautahi Christchurch Railway station at 3 p.m. and returns at 10 p.m. the same night.
