The Federal Aviation Administration developed a new plane-tracking technology called the Next Generation Air Transportation System, or “NextGen.” Through a network of interconnected systems, NextGen is set to improve how the National Airspace System helps pilots and air traffic controllers navigate and communicate.
Developed to transform the air traffic management system, NextGen technology is already in place at 62 U.S. airports, in both air traffic control facilities and aircraft cockpits, although passengers most likely won’t even notice.
With safety as the top priority, NextGen assists aircraft in flying routes that take less time, but are also less likely to experience turbulence. It also streamlines the taxiing, arrival and departure processes and checkpoints for planes, thus shortening the amount of time passengers have to wait on the tarmac. Other benefits include fewer delays and cancellations that may be caused by inclement weather or other air traffic control issues.
So how does it work? The secure system allows data-sharing among aircraft and air traffic control for better flight planning, and improved tracking systems mean a more efficient system that could lead to more route options. New navigation procedures will ease the landing process and make touchdown on the runway a lot smoother.
