As the selfie stick takes the travel world by storm, Nixie is preparing for take-off. This mobile, flying camera will soon be entering the travel industry as the must-have accessory for incredible photos from all angles and heights.

The prototype was submitted by developers to Intel’s Make It Wearable competition in November 2014 and took home the winning prize of $50,000 toward fashioning the concept into a marketable product. Initially aimed toward the rock-climbing market, developers hope to launch the product into the mainstream population as well.

The quadcopter (a helicopter with four limbs) can be worn on the user’s wrist and weighs less than 0.1 pound. When the user is ready to capture a moment, he or she can select one of four operating modes. Boomerang mode involves a release from the user at a set distance and the recording of photos or videos from that distance before returning to the user. Under panorama mode, Nixie takes photos that occupy an arc of 360 degrees. With follow-me mode, the drone follows the user through the user’s movements and paths. When Nixie is in hover mode, it does just that — hovers above the user while being controlled by the user’s smartphone.

While still in production mode, pricing information is not yet available.

What to Do During a Trip to Morro Bay, California

No, it’s not Monterey Bay. We’re talking Morro Bay, California, located about a 2.5-hour drive to the south, about halfway between San Jose and Los Angeles. A quieter destination, Morro Bay offers plenty for the outdoor adventurer to enjoy.
