Tips / Safety

Whenever you travel through a new country you want to be cognizant of any safety issues you may come across. Rome is a gorgeous and safe destination for all travelers, but as with any highly populated tourist destination, you need to keep your wits about you. Pickpocketing is one of the most common crimes in Rome; here are some ways you can avoid it and other petty crimes.

Beware of Street Merchants

When walking through any popular piazza or landmark people offering roses or religious regalia may accost you. This is not The Bachelor, do not accept the rose. Although it may feel rude to dismiss these people many times, they will offer gifts, then hound you down for money. It is also popularly used as a distraction for someone to pickpocket you.

Keep Your Valuables Close

You shouldn’t roam the streets with a backpack that is easy to open from behind, or a purse that can be easily reached. Instead opt to keep your valuables in a safe place. Tons of items built to safeguard from pickpockets can be found online or in stores, such as wallets you strap under your shirt.

Musical Tips

Rome is known as an enchanting place where a musician playing a violin may serenade you as you eat on on a cobblestone street. By all means enjoy the music, but if a musician comes directly to your table, be aware they are looking for tips. If you don’t feel like shelling out the extra euros, politely tell them no.

Hit and Run

Another tip for dining: Don’t leave your cell phone on your street-side table as you eat. People are known to walk up and snatch them as you look away.

No Sleep Till The Vatican

Do not fall asleep on public transport. Traveling can be tiring and trying to fit in all the best tourist attractions will have you wiped out, but keeping your eyes open on the train, bus or subway is a must. Even seemingly trustworthy neighbors and friendly Italian faces (i.e. children) may snatch your belongings as you doze.

Put the Selfie Stick Down

And any other distractions while you’re at it. Looking distracted with a cell phone in front of your face makes you target No. 1 for pickpockets. There are plenty of sights to soak in, and plenty of opportunities to take pictures, but always be aware of your surroundings. Enjoy the bulk of the day with your bare eyes and you won’t regret it.
