A beloved Oregon hiking trail returned to top form after sitting for a decade in disrepair. The Timberline Trail is now complete and can once again be hiked in full. Trail repairs were officially completed last September, but winter delayed the true opening of the hiking trail until now.
The trail typically takes backpackers four or five days to complete. It encircles the glacier-capped dome of Mount Hood, just east of Portland. The 40-mile trail covers an impressive range of terrain, from desert to rainforest. Other mountains are visible from the trail, including the Coastal Range and Cascade peaks like Mount St. Helens, Mount Rainier and Mount Jefferson.
The trail closed in 2006 after a debris flow took out a significant chunk, closing a large section of trail. Hikers had to reroute over a large swath of difficult terrain or cut trips short.
The Timberline Trail is still a challenge, even with the restored piece in place. The trip requires significant preparation and experience.
