Tips / Travel

If you are setting off on a cycle tour for a few days, there are a number of items you will need.

On a summer trip, your packing list will be shorter than at other times of the year. Here is your guide to essential items.

Humans need water in order to survive, and cycling is thirsty work. In the summer heat, it’s important to mount bottle holders to your downtube and seat tube, and making sure your bottles are regularly filled.

For first timers, it may seem like a strange idea, but experienced cycle tourers will be well aware of the value of chammy cream. The cream is used to protect your nether regions from saddle rash and keep you comfortable on the road for longer. Pack some sachets and remember to use them, as prevention is definitely better than cure.

While you can’t prepare for every mechanical eventuality on a long trip, it’s important to keep a basic set of tools and spare parts with you. This should include a pump, puncture patches and glue, inner tubes and tire levers.

If you are embarking on a longer trip, it is worth investing in a set of SPD clip pedals and shoes. The technology is designed to ensure your energy is used in the most efficient way, and even a small difference with every pedal stroke can make a big difference as you clock up the miles.

Even if you are cycling in summer, it is important to prepare for worse weather. Pack a waterproof shell jacket and a merino base layer for when things get ugly.
