Packing for Three Climates

Everyone has met someone who has been on an implausibly long journey with just a carry-on bag, and while there is no real need to be quite so extreme, these tips will help you pack efficiently for three different climates.

South America provides a great example of a trip which can take in a huge variety of climatic conditions in a short space of time. Even if you are only planning on visiting Argentina, you can move from the cold, mountainous region of Patagonia, to the cosmopolitan capital of Buenos Aires, and on to the tropical rainforest around Iguazu in a matter of weeks.

To ensure you are adequately dressed for all weather and occasions without needing two suitcases, stick to the golden rule of layering. Chuck bulky, fleece-lined jackets in favor of a series of lightweight layers that can be added easily when needed, such as a micro fleece and a pack-away, waterproof layer.

Take a pair of black breathable hiking pants, which can double as smart trousers in the city, and one light cotton long-sleeved shirt. The outfit works just as well on the trail as it does at a smarter cocktail party.

Try to apply this logic to the rest of the items in your suitcase; make sure they have at least two functions. Ideally the fabrics will be quick-drying, enabling you to carry less of each item without worrying about having sufficient time to wash and dry.
