Packing to go abroad can seem like the most overwhelming task. How can you possibly prepare yourself for months away from home? What do you need? More importantly, what isn’t essential? What if you forget something important? Here are some tips to help you pack for your journey.
Electronics
Set up an international plan for your cell phone or download an app like WhatsApp that will help you communicate while abroad.
You may want to invest in a nicer camera or GoPro to capture those unforgettable moments abroad you never want to forget.
Pro tip: Purchase any hair products like blow dryers and straighteners in the country you’re staying. Most American tools will not work as well through an adapter, and may even short circuit during use.
WiFi hotspots are available for purchase through many abroad programs or at the airport. This ensures you will have WiFi with you wherever you go once you leave your hotel or hostel.
Purchase an adapter (or a few) to keep all these devices charged and working for your whole trip. Look up what adapter works for the voltage of the country you’re staying in or, if you’ll be traveling to multiple places, invest in a universal adapter that will work in most countries.
Wardrobe
Less is more when going abroad. Although it will be hard to narrow down your wardrobe to the essentials, overpacking can be a nightmare. Try to put together staple outfits for different climates and occasions: 10 tops, 10 bottomsand 5–10 dresses/rompers for girls is usually a good start.
When it comes to shoes, prepare to do a lot of walking. Make sure any new shoes are broken in, such as Converse, because they can lead to some nasty blisters and discomfort. If bringing heels is a must for you, try to be practical in your choices. A lower heel with a wedge is the best option.
Essentials
A smaller carry-on bag will be a must-have for weekend trips and excursions.
A photocopy of your passport is important if yours gets lost or stolen and you need to get a new one.
Always have a back-up credit or debit card and form of ID kept at your hotel. This can be a lifesaver if yours gets lost or stolen while you’re out.
