Here’s more proof sparkling water is all the rage (thanks, La Croix): Paris is installing free sparkling water fountains around the city.
Eight of the fountains were introduced in 2010, but only recently has Paris City Hall announced it will provide at least one fountain flowing with sparkling water in every one of the city’s 20 arrondissements. In all, nine new fountains will be installed to reach the goal. The first were installed this fall at Square Eugene Varlin.
The city originally presented the idea as a way to ensure Parisians stay hydrated, after they received feedback efforts would be more successful if the water were carbonated. The city is also trying to discourage the waste associated with the use of plastic water bottles.
The fountains dispense water from the main network, and CO2 is added just below or above the fountain. The water must be cold for the CO2 to be properly added, so these fountains are distinctively chilled.
