When your pet is traveling across international borders, it’s crucial that you know and follow all animal transportation requirements for both the origin and destination countries. Rules and restrictions vary by country, but United PetSafe can help you navigate the complex process and help your pet get to their destination without any issues.

Planning far in advance is critical for international pet travel, since some countries require reservations for quarantine space 3-4 months prior to departure. When you plan your travel, contact your destination country’s consulate or embassy and ask about their requirements for importing an animal. Then contact your pet’s veterinarian and make an appointment to obtain the necessary health certificates and any vaccines required by your destination. Before leaving, be sure to have the original and all necessary copies of the health certificate, vaccine records and anything else the countries require.

It also important to note that extra precautions and special requirements apply to certain dog breeds. Short-nosed breeds such as Pugs and Boxers often have hereditary respiratory problems and are more susceptible to heat stroke and difficult breathing when exposed to stress or high temperatures. Also, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) requires reinforced crates for several breeds including pit bulls and mastiffs, among others.

For country-specific international travel regulations, United Airlines recommends you visit the IATA website.

Wherever you and your pet are headed, make sure you’re flying legally, safely and comfortably with United PetSafe.
