Heading to the pumpkin patch for some fall decorations? Follow these tips for picking your winning pumpkin this season, whether it’s for baking, carving or sitting on the front stoop. Happy hunting!
Look for a Completely Orange Pumpkin
Any pumpkins that are green or discolored will not ripen further; pick out the most orange in the bunch.
Check for Soft Spots
If you want the pumpkin to last, you want one that’s hard and sturdy and won’t spoil quickly. If it has any soft spots, move on.
Check for Cracks and Splits
Cracks and splits can be signs of more rot; again, solid is best!
Press With a Thumbnail to Check for Hardness
The surface of the pumpkin should not easily scratch. Use your thumbnail to check for hardness.
Look for Holes, Bugs and Insects
If bugs have gotten to your pumpkin, that’s definitely not something you want to carve into or cook for Thanksgiving dessert.
Check for a Sturdy Stem
Every pumpkin needs a good sturdy handle for lifting and creating jack-o-lantern lids. If the stem breaks off while lifting, find a newer sturdier one.
Chooser Smaller for Pie, Larger for Carving
Smaller pumpkins work better for cooking, while larger, rounder pumpkins work better for carving.
