With Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the holiday with a weekend getaway. There are plenty of spooky destinations to choose from, but some are better than others, depending on what kind of experience you’re looking for.

The Stanley Hotel in Colorado is known as the inspiration for Stephen King’s The Shining, but a hotel full of ghosts isn’t the only thing you’ll find. The Shining Ball, an exclusive Halloween party held every year at the property, is an adults-only evening of drinks and dancing. Costumes are required and extravagance is expected.

Salem, Mass., is a no-brainer for Halloween aficionados in New England. The town has lots going on during the month of October. With ghost tours, haunted houses, costume balls and more, Salem offers something for everyone to enjoy, regardless of your fear threshold.

Get your voodoo on in New Orleans for Halloween in what some call America’s most haunted city. Check out haunted houses and cemeteries galore, before heading down to the French Quarter for the annual Halloween parade. Parties, festivals and fairs abound in the streets of NOLA during this festive season.

Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., is the perfect Halloween destination for literary buffs. Visit the grave of Washington Irving and other famous deceased at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery before taking a haunted hayride.
