Language lovers rejoice: Washington, D.C. has a new museum dedicated entirely to words. With plans to open sometime in 2020, Planet Word is advertised as a museum where “language comes to life.”
The concept was formed and (mostly) funded by a public school teacher who envisioned an immersive environment where visitors can engage in interactive exercises to explore language and test their skills and knowledge.
The 51,000-square-foot museum will be located in the Franklin School on 13th Street NW, the site of one of the District’s first public schools. Exhibits will be spread throughout 11 galleries where visitors will be able to take part in voice-activated activities (the first of their kind) including a 12-foot globe with 5,000 LED lights that display words in different languages.
Another gallery will be poetry focused and will play audio of famous poems while the words are projected onto gallery walls. Elsewhere, a 22-foot Word Wall will alternate 1,000 different words in three-dimensional formats.
Other museum amenities include a gift shop, puzzle rooms, classrooms, a restaurant and an auditorium for presentations. Like most (but not all) museums in D.C., Planet Word will be free to enter.
