Tips / Destination

Choosing a summertime vacation destination typically revolves around daydreams of warm, sunny beaches with miles of sand and frozen drinks galore, but there’s something to be said for an alternative summer getaway to a location that may not be on most travelers’ radars.

Quebec is one such location that comes to life in the summer. The reprieve from the dark winter months offers the opportunity for the Québécois to come out of their shells and take advantage of the pleasant climate and plethora of activities the Canadian metropolis has to offer.

July in particular is an eventful month for Quebec as the city plays host to a handful of festivals. The Festival d’été de Québec (or the Quebec Summer Festival) ( takes place July 5–15 and practically takes over the city. The price of admission is $80, but covers entry to nearly every attraction throughout the duration of the festival. Live music performances will be on stages throughout the city and will feature artists like The Weeknd and Jethro Tull.

In addition to these concerts, the festival holds surprise pop-up concerts in secret locations. Attendees can follow the hashtag #PopUpFEQ on social media to view clues about the clandestine concerts.

The festival’s Family Place will feature other attractions and activities, including a picnic area, family-friendly games and animated performances. All events will take place around Quebec’s centuries-old fortress and its vibrant downtown district.
