Kiruna, in Sweden’s cold north, can feel forbidding and unwelcoming. The town moves every few years to follow the iron ore deposit that sits beneath its streets, so not much work goes into beautifying the place, which is rather austere and cold.
But then there’s the SPiS Hostel, which provides visual and psychological relief from the harshness of Kiruna. The hostel offers single and double hotel rooms with private bathrooms plus a typical hostel bunk-style dorm and the prices are great, at just around $100 for a single room with a bathroom, breakfast included.
The rooms are tastefully appointed with minimalist Scandinavian touches, yet feel cozy and warm. Wool blankets, artwork depicting mountain scenery and modern light fixtures adorn the spaces. There’s high-speed WiFi and the hostel is in the center of town, so it’s easy to get around on foot or via public transportation.
The restaurant is probably the biggest draw. It’s easily the nicest in town, yet offers reasonable prices for its upscale experience. Sausages and bread are made in house. Beer is available from around the world and from around Sweden, and there’s an extensive wine and cocktail list, too. Dishes are superbly prepared and represent upscale takes on Swedish dishes. You can’t go wrong.
