Kiruna is a mining town in northern Sweden with a fascinating history. The town moves as the iron ore mine expands, so every visit is unique and different. There’s also easy access to the pristine wilderness north of the Arctic Circle here, and an interesting lens into the culture of the native Sami people.
Start your day with breakfast at your hotel, followed by a tour of the world’s largest iron ore deposit mine, which runs about $35.
Next, eat lunch at Café Safari, one of the best restaurants in town. It’s set in a charming house that stands out among the more bland buildings of a town constantly on the move. Expect to spend about $15.
The afternoon can be spent browsing the shops in the city center; several offer Sami handicrafts. You can also scope out the Kiruna kyrka, built to look like a huge Sami kåta (hut), a massive red church near the city center. And don’t miss the Sami Museum, an excellent opportunity to learn about the indigenous group that carves out a living in the frozen north. It costs about $2.50 to enter.
Finally, end your day with dinner and drinks (including locally made beer) at SPiS Hostel, which has a surprisingly outstanding restaurant. The rest of your budget ($52.50) will be plenty for an entrée, drink and dessert.
