Reviews / Hotel

Opened last fall in Mexico City’s Centro Historico, Umbral, a Curio Collection by Hilton property is a new, luxurious hotel located right in the heart of the city, within walking distance of many top attractions, as well as fantastic eateries.

I arrived at the hotel after a long travel day and was cheerfully greeted by the staff who offered welcome snacks and plenty of information on both the property and the neighborhood. Both my bags and I were whisked away to the fourth floor of the historic building, which still boasts slight touches of a 1920s Art Deco feel, while fully embracing a more modern aesthetic. For example, the elevator interiors are vintage and original, but the dark marble floors, long curtains draping the walls and minimalistic furnishings are a bit more 21st century.

I had booked an interior balcony room, which featured a small antechamber upon immediately entering the room, which housed the desk and safe. After moving aside a dark curtain, I entered the bedroom area, with its sleek and simple bed, single chair and hanging television. Tucked in a corner, the bar area offered a small selection of drinks for a fee (though Hilton Honors members receive complimentary bottled water each day of a stay). The bathroom offered a walk-in rain shower and small vanity. A set of doors off the bedroom area led out onto the interior balcony, shared with the next room over (though I never saw anyone else using it). The interior balcony offered a small couch and wrapped around a well-lit, open space filled with hanging plants.

The hotel boasts several enjoyable social spaces. A quiet art gallery is filled with whimsical pieces depicting rabbits in unusual acts. A small library is tucked away beyond the gallery and acts as a business center with a printer and computer; the library offers a range of vinyl and seating. Adjacent to the library is a theater, which guests are also invited to use.

The hotel’s rooftop offers a pool and hot tub that are well-hidden from the rooftop restaurant and bar. Views overlook the city and mountains beyond. I visited the restaurant and bar each day during my stay, enjoying drinks from the expansive cocktail and mezcal menu, as well as tacos from the modern Mexican menu. The restaurant was relatively quiet during the week, but perked up around the weekends, serving large groups clustered around the restaurant’s casual sofas and low tables.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Umbral, and would gladly visit the property again. The staff, amenities and location all combined to create a space that would be a haven for any busy traveler.

New Orleans Storyville Museum Opens

New Orleans is home to a bevy of great museums, and the city just welcomed its most recent addition to the roster: New Orleans Storyville Museum. Storyville, a historic New Orleans neighborhood, experienced its heyday in the late 1800s and early 1900s when it served as not only the city’s red-light district, but also a hub for other illegal activity and entertainment.
