Reviews / Restaurant

When you think Israeli food, you think of things like kubba and sambusak, maybe even a nice tabbouleh. Zahav of Philadelphia redefines these classics.

Located on St. James Place on the ground of Society Hill Towers, this modern take on Israeli cuisine is far from what you would expect from a simple hummus shack or run-of-the-mill falafel joint.

Since 2008, Zahav has serviced the Philadelphia area with its unique cuisine and signature laffa bread, made fresh to order in a wood-fired taboon. Every dish is a work of art at Zahav, constantly reinventing how Israeli cuisine is perceived.

The décor of Zahav is quite authentic, with golden limestone walls and floors; the design of the restaurant conjures images of the hidden courtyards of Jerusalem. Hand-carved tables and high ceilings add to the relaxed family atmosphere of the establishment, creating a truly unforgettable experience for all who walk through the doors.

Bringing rich, exotic flavors and colors to each dish, it is no wonder Zahav has been making a name for itself in Philadelphia’s culinary scene. Head chef Michael Solomonov has been the recipient of many awards, including the James Beard award for “Best Chef, Mid-Atlantic.” Solomonov is best known for his intrinsic ability to turn bland into beauty, taking simple dishes and reinventing them with an exotic twist.

Zahav is a one-of-a-kind dining experience which should be enjoyed by cuisine connoisseurs the world over. With a friendly, accommodating staff and some of the best food in Philadelphia, next time you are in the area, make sure to treat yourself to this truly authentic experience.
