Seattleites love Hawai’i — after all, the tropical paradise is just one flight away, offering the perfect remedy for the endlessly dreary days of winter in the Pacific Northwest.
It’s no surprise Seattle is home to a growing number of Hawai’ian restaurants, each trying to bring a bit of sunshine and aloha to the Emerald City.
Among the first to open was the Marination food truck, fusing Korean and Hawai’ian flavors into rice bowls, tacos and sliders. The incredibly popular truck launched a mini empire for its owners, who now operate two trucks, two brick-and-mortar Marination restaurants and a fourth Hawai’ian-themed restaurant, Super Six, opened in 2015.
Another major player is Ma’Ono, which specializes in various Hawai’ian dishes as well as fried chicken; it also offers a major whiskey selection. The restaurant is incredibly popular and can be credited as one of the first to bring the flavors of the islands to Seattle.
More recently, the popular food truck Sam Choy’s Poke to the Max, owned by Hawai’ians Max Heigh and celebrity chef Sam Choy, opened a brick-and-mortar location serving dishes like its eponymous poke, a raw fish salad. Poke has become incredibly popular in Seattle, and restaurants centered on the dish are popping up around the area.
