Study Abroad

Melissa Tait checks in weekly from her study abroad semester in Rome; catch up with her every Wednesday on Trazee Travel.

Sundays in Rome are the perfect time to check out some of the best markets. The biggest market, Porta Portese Flea Market, near Trastevere, has a section of antique dealers and a larger portion of stands with new made in Italy leather, accessories and Italian-styled clothing. This market is especially geared to tourists and although it is great for souvenirs, I wanted to branch out to another market.

This Sunday, I decided to check out the Borghetto Flaminio Market. I read about its great vintage designer finds and it is surprisingly close to my school’s campus. Although there was a €1.60 entrance fee, I did not regret it throughout my two hours of shopping. There were tables and tables of designer goods, including more Louis Vuitton bags than people. Mostly middle-aged women were shopping, and I could not blame them for digging to find their next treasure. I was able to bargain a Tommy Hilfiger trench coat for only €25 and regrettably turned down a Dolce & Gabbana coat for just €40. This market is heaven for any name-brand fashionistas and I will be sure to return.

I hope to check out other markets on the weekend, including Monti Mercato, a hipster flea market; and Borgo Parioli, another ritzy vintage market. The shopping never ends in Rome!
