Want to start an exercise routine? Now that fall is here and the summer heat has, hopefully, made its way South, a running habit is a great thing to pick up. Running is an easy and affordable way to stay in shape whether you are at home or traveling. If you are not an experienced runner, knowing where to start is the hardest part. Many people have tried and failed to start a running habit on their own. Running with a friend does not necessarily work either. If they are too experienced, then you cannot keep up. And if you are running with a fellow novice, there is potential you may end up at Starbucks instead of on the lakefront path.
Like in any other area of life, podcasts can help. There are many running podcasts out there for the experienced runner, but not if you are starting at zero. This is where the “Guardian’s Guide to Running” comes in. This podcast came out a couple of years ago and will take you from walking to running in just eight short weeks. You are guided through warm-up walks and interval training, until you slowly move from running one minute to eight, and then 30 minutes in a row. As your virtual coach will tell you, you just need a good pair of running shoes, an electronic device and a little bit of will power. The podcast does the rest. Once you have mastered the beginner’s run, you can move on to the advanced running or even marathon training. Good luck with your first 5k!
