While cycling through a city is often a wonderful way to take in the sights, doing so in Rome is not always easy. The beautiful city is infamous for its chaotic traffic and the locals’ indifference to traffic signals and signs. If you’re just dying to bike through the streets, keep a few things in mind.
Stay Off Main Roads
Rome’s main streets are crowded and crazy and it’s best to steer clear of them. Instead, spend your time winding through back alleys and little used paths. You’re less likely to get run over this way.
Stick to the Bike Paths
There are designated bike paths winding through the city, though finding them isn’t always easy. Locals can point you in the direction of a map, so be sure to plot your route before embarking on your journey.
Cycle the River
The Tiber River is one of the most striking features of Rome and there’s a cycling path that runs right alongside it. Take this path to view the city, as the river runs past many of the most famous attractions.
Bike the Appian Way
The Appian Way is still standing after thousands of years and is a must-see while in Rome. If you’re dying to cycle through the city, maybe just go here. The 10-mile path is free of cars meaning there’s less chance you’ll get flattened.
