Safety in Seoul

Tips / Safety

Though they’re bordered by one of the least friendly nations in the world to the north, South Koreans are a particularly friendly bunch and welcoming of foreign visitors. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep your wits about you when visiting Seoul, though.

Crime

Though Seoul doesn’t have much of a problem with violent crime, there is a risk of non-violent activity like robbery. Be smart and keep your valuables in your room or locked in a safe when wandering the city.

Traffic

Drivers in Seoul tend to be a bit more aggressive than Americans. This includes taxis and busses, so make sure you follow the signals and maybe give yourself an extra moment before trying to cross the street.

Terrorism

There haven’t been any major terrorist attacks and due to tensions with the North, the police pretty heavily patrol Seoul. Avoid dodgy characters if you’re truly concerned, but it’s not something you should worry about.

Strangers

Most Korean nationals are friendly, though older folks who don’t speak English might greet you with suspicion. It helps to learn a little bit of the language to try and communicate, but that’s true no matter where you go.
