Seaworld San Diego

After the release of the film Blackfish, Seaworld has been in the news a lot for all the wrong reasons. Depending on your stance on the issue, Seaworld can be a great treat for the kids or a nightmare.

You definitely get less bang for your buck these days, with shorter, less grandiose shows at this San Diego staple. On the positive side, they’ve geared their entertainment toward being more educational.

It is a great opportunity to learn all about dolphins, whales and sea turtles, among other things, in the wild and the need for conservation.

If you have smaller children, the rides are pretty sufficient. The Manta rollercoaster will provide a decent thrill for the kids, but many of the attractions are more carnival-esque than theme park.

At more than $80 a ticket it’s a little upsetting to see animals do little more than swim in their cages and have access to less than a dozen rides. The shark and penguin environments, in particular, looked dirty during our visit.

Truth be told you might be better off driving to the La Jolla coves to give your children a chance to see the sea lions and seals in their natural environment rather than shell out the cash to see them at Seaworld. You might even catch a dolphin or whale off the shore, if you’re lucky.

While slightly entertaining, with Disneyland and Legoland a short drive up the road, you might want to consider saving your money and visiting one those gems, instead.
