Anyone who travels frequently by air has encountered a passenger who tacks extra time onto the airport security queue.
Sometimes, unforeseen issues can arise while going through the motions of security checks. Many blunders and faux pas are easily avoidable, though, and being conscious of these potential footfalls can help avoid unnecessary stress for you and your fellow travelers.
Here are some tips to help you breeze through the airport, from the front door to your gate.
Arrive on time: Security line etiquette starts at check-in. Tardy travelers who are in a rush may take out their stress on security agents or fellow passengers, slowing down the entire process.
Find out how long it will take you to arrive at the airport while factoring in traffic and weather forecasts. Allow ample time to check in for your flight, clear security and find your gate.
American Airlines compiled a list of suggested arrival times based on destination. For example, the airline suggests checking in at least 60 minutes before departure on a domestic flight if you are not checking luggage, and at least 90 minutes beforehand if you are checking luggage.
Be ready for security: To save time for yourself and everyone behind you, keep items security agents need to review — such as passports, driver’s licenses and boarding passes — in an easily accessible place, like the front compartment of a purse or a jacket pocket.
Wear flip-flops or other shoes that can be easily removed to avoid wasting time unbuckling and unlacing. In that same vein, avoid wearing metal jewelry or other metal accessories, and make sure keys, coins and other metal detector-averse items are placed on the conveyor belt, not on your person.
Remember your manners: Airports can be a stressful place, but taking out that stress while dealing with officials in the security line will only make things worse for you and everyone around you. Speak politely and at a reasonable volume, and mind any small children traveling with you. Moving quickly, efficiently and politely through airport security will help ensure your travels — and the travels of your neighbors — get off to a smooth start.
