How to See Tequila in One Day

The town of Tequila is the birthplace of the famous Mexican spirit, and provides a great tourist attraction for visitors to the Mexican state of Jalisco.

Tequila is an easy daytrip from Guadalajara, Mexico’s second-biggest city. You can go on an organized bus tour from Guadalajara’s central square, hop on the Jose Cuero tequila train or go under your own steam. The Cuervo train is incredibly expensive, but the tourist board tours are more affordable. If you want to be ferried around in comfort, it’s a good option.

For those on more of a budget or who prefer to travel freely, you can get a bus from Guadalajara to Tequila. There are regular departures, and it should take around 90 minutes. On arrival, you will have your pick of the many distilleries to see fields of agave and watch how tequila is made.

One of the best experiences is at Destiladora del Valle, where you can get a guided tour and a tasting session for $3 per person. You’ll see how the agave is harvested and distilled before tasting various tequilas at the end of the tour.

Afterwards, visit the on-site bottle shop to pick up some souvenirs or wander through town to visit other distilleries. The last bus back to Guadalajara leaves around 7 p.m., so keep an eye on the time. Alternatively, take a taxi back to the city for around $30.
