Smart locks have been gaining traction in the tech world, but the smart home market is still in its infancy. Unlike many of its competitors, the August Smart Lock is a retrofit for your existing hardware, eliminating the need to replace your deadbolt.

The August has a 3.25-inch diameter and a depth of 2.25 inches, which is on the slightly bulkier side compared to your standard doorknob. Powered by four AA batteries, the smart lock connects to your phone through Bluetooth and is compatible with Android 4.4+ and iOS 7+.
An August app controls the device and can even register a keychain to work with multiple locks and distribute digital keys with custom permissions to people, a feature that comes free when many other smart lock manufactures charge per key.
While users can control their deadbolt through the app, one of the most useful tools of the smart lock is its auto-unlocking feature that will open your door after traveling more than 100 yards from your house.

Unfortunately, with Bluetooth you cannot control the August remotely unless it is bridged to your WiFi network with an external hub or the company’s Connect device. Once this is done, the lock can be controlled from anywhere you have Internet access.
To secure your information, August utilizes 128-bit AES software encryption. Learn more about the device at august.com.
