Montevideo is Uruguay’s capital city, located on the southern coast of the country. With a rich cultural scene and growing tech industry, the city consistently ranks high in Latin America for quality of life and is becoming a popular destination for English-speaking expats and travelers.
Before heading out for the night, grab a drink and a bite to eat at La Ronda on Ciudadela Street. The place is a hangout for Montevideo’s artist community, and they regularly play music from a collection of vintage vinyl. While you’re there, be sure to order the local favorite, caipiroshkas, which are caipirinhas made of vodka.
To get an authentic Uruguayan experience, head to one of Montevideo’s numerous tango venues. Though usually associated with Buenos Aires and Argentina, tango is just as much a part of Uruguayan culture. The music originally developed along the Río de la Plata, the natural border between the two countries, and spawned a variety of regional styles.
To try the dance yourself, head to Mercado de la Abundancia, situated on top of a historic bazaar. The gritty establishment has a live orchestra and is popular with dancers of all skills, though on Sundays the floor is restricted to professionals, so you know you’re going to see some serious moves.
